People have been making baskets and other woven items from locally growing plant materials for thousands of years. Willow is a wonderfully versatile, beautiful and sustainable material and is ideal for weaving into strong and light structures. Certain varieties of willow have been cultivated and, when coppiced each year, provide beautifully flexible slender rods for weaving. These rods can be dried and stored for future use and when re-soaked, are even better for weaving than the freshly cut rods.
